Debunking divorce myths

At this time of year, many people are working through troubled marriages, but they may not be ready to initiate a divorce. They may be intimidated by their spouse or the specter of backlash from family members who believe they should continue to work on the marriage. People considering divorce may also be hamstrung by the many myths that come with divorce, such as rich men always have an advantage in divorce court, or working women are seen as betraying children.

How to deal with awkward questions during the holiday

Ready or not, the holiday season is going to be upon us soon. Next Friday (November 1st) don’t be surprised with how quickly Halloween decorations, candy displays and costumes are quickly whisked away and replaced with Christmas trees, Hanukkah menorahs, and other holiday displays.  For divorcing and separated parents, this can mark the beginning of a difficult time of the year.

How to resolve parenting conflicts during Halloween

It is not uncommon for divorcing parents to have difficulty establishing (or maintaining) a parenting schedule. This issue often rears its ugly head when children’s events draw near. With Halloween coming next Thursday, some of our readers may be experiencing difficulty with deciding where their child will go Trick-or-Treating. In some instances, parents may debate whether the child should take part in the annual event at all.

Financial considerations before marriage

If there is one thing that is anticipated as fall approaches, it is the holiday season. Retailers look forward to Black Friday, children look can see Christmas on the horizon, and perspective brides wait with anticipation for their beaus to ask them to say “I do”.

What should come first? Bankruptcy or divorce?

It's no secret that financial issues can lead to marital discord, and subsequently to divorce. With that, many people in financial (and emotional) toil may be unsure about how to proceed with dividing property and debt. The question becomes much more complicated with the prospect of bankruptcy is involved. Specifically, what should be done first: a divorce or bankruptcy?

Counseling can help children of divorce

Indeed, divorce can be emotionally difficult for the spouses involved. After all, it is the end of a relationship that the parties believed would stand the test of time, and the sense of betrayal (or cruelty) can have lifelong consequences. The turmoil of divorce can also have a detrimental effect on children. Kids have a unique sense of blaming themselves for the demise of their parents' relationship, and this can also lead to destructive behavior.

Financial issues men must confront during divorce

While many men may not consider it as such, a divorce is the termination of a business relationship just as much as it is a personal relationship. Indeed, there is a final order that divides assets, and pieces of personal (and real) property will exchange hands, but there are important financial questions that men must answer before filing a dissolution petition in Texas, as well as when papers are served upon a man.
