The Jennifer Garner-Ben Affleck divorce teaches several lessons

The news that Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck were getting a divorce is something that many people saw coming. Other people were shocked by the news. No matter which side of that you were on, the Ben-Jen divorce is a good reminder that prenuptial agreements and the timing of a divorce filing can be important for anyone who is ending a marriage.

Some people have found it interesting that Garner filed for divorce 10 years and 1 day after she and Affleck got married. Many are noting that she chose that day on purpose because the marriage was more than 10 years. People in Texas would do well to pay attention to that because in Texas, one stipulation of spousal support is that the marriage lasted at least 10 years and one spouse is unable to earn sufficient income.

Some people are also pointing to the fact that there might have been a stipulation in a prenuptial agreement that was based on the marriage lasting a decade. That hasn’t been confirmed by either party, so it is pure speculation. It does, however, bring up the fact that conditions in a prenuptial agreement are often important considerations when a person is filing for a divorce.

Another important lesson from this divorce is that you should always know about the marital finances, including what property and assets your spouse has. When it comes to property division during a divorce, having an accurate account of all assets can help to ensure you are getting a settlement that puts your needs first.

It is always important to understand how Texas laws might affect your divorce. The Affleck-Garner divorce has given a few examples of considerations that might come into play.
