Dad's getting primary custody should be easier, but isn't always

Father's Day 2016 is just past. We wonder how many dads around Houston are now walking around with a new mug or tee shirt declaring him "World's Greatest Dad." It's a well-deserved title in most cases, even if the standard by which it is set is in the eye of the beholder.

Diversity can create challenges in family law matters

Today, in Houston and the rest of the United States, there is an experience that many native-born folks might be having that they never thought they would. It's culture shock. The phenomenon is something you might feel if you were to travel to another country and stay there for some extended period. You, being an outsider, might come to feel disconnected and out of sorts until you become acclimated.

Don't grandparents always get custody of orphaned grandchildren?

In the traditional view of the nuclear family, it might seem to be perfectly logical to assume that if a child loses both of his or her parents that one or the other set of grandparents will automatically be granted guardianship of the orphan. It just seems to make sense.

'Panama Papers' case reveals asset hide-and-seek game in divorce

By this time, the so-called Panama Papers story may be something fading into the background of current events for many people in Houston. So much has happened since the story broke in April. It would take some pretty big news to grab headlines away from mass shootings and the presidential election campaign.

Child custody: Summer holiday planning best done well in advance

Divorced parents in Texas know how difficult it can be to get through the summer without haggling about parenting time. This is especially true if vacation time and holidays were not part of a court ordered parenting schedule agreed upon at the time of the divorce. This can be a stressful time for children and parents, regardless of who has child custody.

Alimony, maintenance, support: Word changes reveal shifting norms

Not too long ago, when people in Houston and the rest of Texas talked about alimony, everyone pretty much understood what was being talked about. Alimony was that amount of money that ex-husbands paid to their ex-wives as part of a divorce settlement. At the time, divorce was fault based, women weren't in the workforce supporting themselves and the presumption was that ex-wives were owed the support of their ex-husbands for the rest of their lives.

Property division in Texas requires careful consideration

Divorce laws differ from state to state, and it is not likely that couples would include considerations about the divorce laws of their state in their marriage plans. However, gaining relevant knowledge may prove to be beneficial in the event of a divorce in the future. Texas is a community property state, and the manner in which property is classified and managed as either marital or separate during the marriage will rule the property division process.
