Study finds young children are hit hard when parents divorce

We know that children here in Houston and all over the country are affected emotionally and psychologically when their parents divorce. Divorce is not easy and it can affect family members a great deal. A recent determined which age group is most affected by divorce. The study results were quite revealing.

New research published online and appearing this September in an issue of Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin found that a child whose parents divorce early in the child's life is more insecure in their relationship with their parents than children whose parents divorce when they are older.

An investigator in the study stated that older children have already built a secure relationship with their parents and thus are more likely to trust the parent than someone who is insecure. Comfort level depends on the parent's and the child's confidence in that parent's ability to provide for the child's psychological needs.

The research team completed two studies, which analyzed the effects of divorce on children's relationships with their parents. The study interviewed 7,735 individuals in the process and over one-third of those surveyed came from divorced homes. The research team explained that the findings were important in determining how people form close relationships, especially after their parent's go their separate ways.

People's relationships with parents and romantic partners have a significant impact on a person's life. This research is a step closer to understanding why some people have more secure relationships than others.

Divorce is a complex and stressful legal process that places parents against each other. It is also the start of something new, perhaps something better. Here in Houston, complicated high asset divorces are very common and can be quite lengthy. Sadly, kids can get caught in the middle of this process.

The key is to find an amicable separation that both parties can agree to and that causes as little stress as possible for the children. A knowledgeable and experienced legal professional may be able to help reach this goal. The legal professional can provide advice and assist in sorting out the complexities of the divorce process.
