Divorcing parents should plan like retailers for the holidays

If you haven’t received a Christmas catalog from a retailer, chances are that a circular advertising holiday prices has reached your mailbox. Indeed, retailers want to get your attention as soon as possible so that they can get on your radar. If this happens, chances are that you are likely to spend money with them rather than another retailer.

While this may be annoying or refreshing depending on your temperament, it is this type of foresight and planning that divorcing parents should have when making holiday plans. There are several reasons why this course of action should be taken. This post will explain why.

Time is of the essence – Making changes to a custody or parenting time order is not easy. Not only are there rules regarding the timing of modification motion, some courts’ schedules too busy to accommodate immediate motions. By addressing the issue early, there is likely time to come to a resolution, or to file the appropriate paperwork.

A resolution could be made by working with a mediator, whose job it is to help parents reach decision that works for both parties. Parents who disagree with holiday plans may also work with a parenting time expeditor, who is commonly assigned by the court to issue preliminary ruling on how the dispute should be resolved.

Either way, making the time to create a plan for the holidays is helpful not only in resolving any disputes that may arise, but it can also leave avenues for resolution open. If you have questions about parenting time modifications, an experienced family law attorney can help.
