Resolutions that divorcing parents should follow

The first week of the year is commonly about focusing on new beginnings. People decide (or at least have an idea) of what they want to do differently in the coming year. For divorcing parents, there may be plenty of things on their “do differently list” for 2014, whether it is to lose weight, stop smoking or get a better paying job.

In the midst of these self-improvement changes, divorcing parents also should focus on improving relationships with their exes, for the sake of the children…of course. A recent HuffingtonPost.com article set forth some important resolutions for parents to keep. For instance, a divorced parent should not make kids feel guilty if the parent who wanted the divorce is affectionate towards the child, and not to the ex-spouse.

Also, parents should refrain from shooting dirty looks at each other when attending their child’s events, and use their best efforts to be civil during exchanges. When a child is injured in 2014 (because kids do fall down and hurt themselves) parents should pledge not to have a fit and immediately file a modification motion.

Moreover, parents should not put negative connotations on a child’s resemblance to an ex-spouse. It is hurtful to a child’s self esteem. Additionally, parents should avoid posting nasty comments on social media outlets and refrain from having Twitter wars. Social media beefs are just as damaging as in-person shouting matches.

By following a few of these resolutions, it is possible for divorcing parents to have a stress-free year with their exes.
