What are the different types of alimony in Texas?

If you are filing for divorce in Texas, you may be eligible to receive alimony as part of your divorce settlement. Alimony is designed to help you get back on track if you were financially dependent on your spouse while you were married. Whether you stayed at home to take care of the children or you put your career on hold so your spouse could further their education or career, you may receive financial help from your spouse to help you get on your feet and maintain a consistent quality of life.

There are several different types of alimony, including rehabilitative, permanent, modifiable or temporary. Alimony awarded for a short period of time while you get an education or find a self-supporting job is referred to as rehabilitative. This type of alimony generally lasts one to five years depending on the circumstances surrounding the situation. Permanent alimony, on the other hand, is often awarded when a spouse has medical issues or a chronic illness that requires additional, long-term financial support. This type of alimony will last until you pass away and may be eligible for modification. Temporary alimony may be awarded during the time the divorce proceedings are taking place if you need financial support while you transition into being on your own. Alimony may be modified or terminated when the spouse receiving the alimony gets married, or there is a significant change in either parties status.
