How children of divorce benefit from joint custody

When Texan parents get divorced, matters of child custody must still be decided. Texans have many different options when it comes to figuring out what they want from their child custody arrangement. One option to consider is joint custody, which can be surprisingly helpful to children of divorce.

FindLaw examines joint custody and its potential benefits, especially in regard to the children involved in the divorce. Joint custody can include both legal and physical custody. Joint physical custody ensures that both parents have an equitable amount of time living with or visiting the child. Joint legal custody allows both parents to have a legal say in how the child is raised.

Divorce Magazine takes a look at the ways joint custody can support a child. For example, studies have shown that children of joint custody have an easier time adjusting to life in the aftermath of a divorce. They tend to act out less in school and have fewer problems with authority figures like teachers. They seem to exhibit fewer signs of anxiety, depression and PTSD, which can surface in any child of divorce.

Additionally, studies show that having both parents as active participants in a child's life tends to create a living situation that is overall healthier, more balanced, and more sustainable.

Those who are going through a divorce right now may want to learn more about their custody options. While joint custody can be good for many, that doesn't mean it's always the best for everyone. It is important to shop around and view all options.
