Same-sex domestic violence: It's not as rare as you might think

When people think about domestic violence, they generally have the stereotypical image of a large, aggressive man bullying, threatening and outright abusing a much-smaller woman. But this stereotype doesn't really hold true when they're examined carefully -- and it doesn't begin to apply to same-sex relationships.

Your spouse's emotions could lead to a difficult divorce

You may not consider yourself someone who would ever intentionally hurt another person, whether physically or emotionally. You always try to put your best efforts into understanding why another person may act the way he or she does so that you can better control your response and react in a healthy way. Unfortunately, your marriage has reached a point where it is no longer healthy for either of you.

Avoiding violence during custody exchanges

When tempers rise, anything can happen. Unfortunately, issues between a divorced (or divorcing) couple can sometimes get intense, especially if there are children involved. Disputes over custody and the parenting agreement (or one party's compliance with its terms) can sometimes lead to hostility or violence during custody exchanges.

Should you draft a marital contract after the wedding?

When a couple gets married, they may not see the need for a prenuptial agreement. They may not have high incomes or valuable assets, or they may not think that divorce is a possibility in their future. Over time, this may change, and there may be a more pressing need to have some type of legal protection in place. While a prenuptial agreement is not possible after marriage, it is still possible to draft a postnuptial agreement.

What child custody and support rights do same-sex parents have?

Child support and custody issues can be difficult for any couple to navigate. However, there may be some unique problems that same-sex couples have to face when they split up. If the couple used a surrogate to bring their child into their lives, then the court may have to make even more complicated decisions related to child custody and support.
