Divorce accompanies the settlement of custodial and support obligations for the children. The court orders the separated spouses to honor certain responsibilities for the sake of their children. The responsibility of providing a child support payment regularly is important for many reasons, including avoiding contempt of court. However, the most important reason is that not paying child support hurts the child.
One Texas County is in the process of arresting 64 individuals that apparently owe millions of dollars in child support. Though there are many other individuals that have also failed to pay on their child support obligations, the Texas Attorney General's office and local officials are focusing in on these particular individuals because these happen to be the most "notorious" of those behind on their child support payments.
Texas parents are being sent to jail for not paying child support. In one particular county, 17 non-custodial parents were arrested and may face as much as six months in jail.
We recently reported that unpaid child support in Texas amounts to approximately $11 billion. We now find the delinquency rate for child support in one particular Texas County is at 39 percent. This percentage matched a number of other Texas counties as well, and there are some counties that the rate is even higher.
