Texas arresting individuals behind in child support

Texas parents are being sent to jail for not paying child support. In one particular county, 17 non-custodial parents were arrested and may face as much as six months in jail.

This sweep concerned a series of warrants that were sent out for parents that failed to pay child support. There was a concern that if these warrants were not served, certain parents would flee the Texas area.

"Parents have a moral and legal obligation to make regular child support payments," the Texas Attorney General was quoted as saying. "By collecting child support, we are encouraging young Texans have the resources they need to grow healthy and strong."

Parent behind on child support payments may pay cash bonds when seeking release from jail, but in doing so the bonds would be used to pay their delinquent obligations. The Attorney General's office is also trying to make payment arrangements with individuals behind on payments but not subject to any arrest warrants.

Though these types of government action may provide incentives for parents to pay on their delinquent child support obligations, these programs are not likely to catch up with every parent that is failing to honor their obligations. Parents with children that are owed back child support may wish to contact an experienced family law attorney to discover what other options exist.

Attorneys can help in a number of ways as these attorneys will understand the statutory guidelines for the paying of child support, provide assistance in gaining health insurance for the children, and will represent parents in court that are badly in need of receiving assistance in the raising of children.
