3 mistakes to avoid in a divorce

On Behalf of | Aug 16, 2025 | Divorce

So your marriage is about to end. Maybe your spouse has told you they want out of the marriage, or maybe you’ve just realized you’re done with them. Regardless, it’s important to be careful about what you do next.

It’s easy to make mistakes at this time and those could prove problematic down the line. Here are three things to avoid.

1. Leaping into action

There is a lot to do in a divorce, and you still need to keep up with your normal everyday tasks, such as earning an income and raising the children. However much you want to just get the divorce over and done with, you must avoid moving too fast. Your judgment might not be the best right now, and you likely still have a lot to learn about how a divorce works. Slowing down a little gives you time to ensure that the decisions you make are wise ones.

2. Focusing on the past

What’s done is done. However painful or upsetting some of the things that happened may be, you cannot change or undo them. It is far better to focus on things in the present – such as how your kids are doing – and the future, such as where you will live, how much you will be able to earn and what you hope to walk away from the marriage with.

3. Making it too personal

Divorce is highly personal. However, you can’t let the divorce negotiations become too personal. A cool and calculated approach is called for here. If you let your emotions take over, you will find it harder to emerge from the divorce with a settlement that you are still happy with in the months or years to come. It’s best to think of it as a business matter rather than a personal one, difficult as that may be at times.

This is just one of the reasons why having the help of an experienced legal professional can be so valuable. Their detachment from the situation and knowledge of the law can steer you in the right direction.
