Raising a child in two homes can result in conflicts. The issues co-parents face mainly stem from individual matters. However, some are reported in multiple cases across different households.
Here are three examples of such issues:
Parenting styles
It’s extremely common for parents to have different parenting styles. Nonetheless, when living under the same roof, it’s natural for them to balance each other out.
When parents live in separate households, parenting styles can become a source of conflict. Co-parents often disagree on bedtimes, chores, diet, screen time, appropriate apps/content, homework, academic expectations and so on.
Establishing similar routines and rules in both homes can maintain stability for the child and reduce the chances of disagreements.
Discipline approaches
When one parent is strict and the other is more lenient, issues related to discipline can arise. For instance, one may believe that grounding a child for a certain mistake is not necessary. Cases of a parent using leniency, even when they know the child made a mistake to gain favor, are also frequently reported.
Children quickly learn which parent is more lenient. This can lead to them playing one against the other. Maintaining similar rules in both households, respecting each other’s authority and agreeing on discipline approaches are crucial in co-parenting.
Finances
Co-parents often have conflicts over shared costs, daily expenses and extracurricular activities. For example, when one parent purchases an expensive item for the child without talking to the other, and then later sends a receipt for reimbursement. Or when one parent enrolls the child in an expensive extracurricular activity without discussing it with the other.
Co-parents should have a system that allows them to agree on and split child-related expenses, while allowing the child to participate in life, hobbies and social activities.
